I was scrolling taobao and stumbled upon this. Out of all the weird looking baskets, this one takes the cake. I guess tapered, straight wall, flat-bottomed, coned, convex and concave baskets are not enough. Fear not, we now have spherical baskets.

Genuinely curious what this would add though.

  1. I guess the idea is based on a stepdown basket – but You can use the 58mm tamper.

This would just taste over+underextracted at the same time, making the need for the donutshaped untamped grounds real, and a sphereshaped tamper needed too, and it basically impossible to achieve an even extraction regardless.

On one hand, that basket looks just ridiculous, but it’s also good to see people experimenting with new ideas.

I’m very skeptical about this basket improving extraction in any way, but you never know…

  4. Naive-Put6735

It is a better way to extract (the consumers money).

Water follows the path of least resistance. With a dome-shaped basket, the flow would go around the edges. You know the rest.

Spacetime is curved, so should your flow paths be.

In two weeks LH will make a video praising this and then they will be sold out everywhere.

  8. We will literally try spherical baskets instead of getting therapy.

Someone quick! Develop a triangle or I guess pyramid basket!

  10. CapNigiri

I’ve seen some spherical single dose baskets sometimes, maybe that’s the.case

It’s for people seeking those elusive pi notes.

Ie a natural washed Ethiopian with hints a bergamot, rosehip, and pecan pi.

The year was 2069 when the megagon basket swept first place at the James Hoffman World Espresso Championship

We’re slowly moving back to solid porterfilters.

They’ll be the new trend in 18 months before the inevitable move back to bottomless ones in 3yrs

Weren’t convex tampers a thing approx 10 years ago? I have not seen any since ages and I think the consensus was that they do more harm than good. I think this is the revival of the same idea.

Though I wonder: Flat showerhead – flat espresso puck surface – flat basket. If convex basket, this would require a convex puck surface and a convex showerhead. Since nobody does that: I think this idea is bad.

  15. Just waiting for the Insta coffee influencers to start spruiking this as the next best thing, with their promo link of course.

  16. No-Following-5120

Because you need to buy another basket that producers make profit 🙂

Death march of capitalism? Aways something new to sell.

Or maybe there is a crazy Hoffman brain out there still seeking the perfect cup, forever; but I think it’s the first thing.

Spherical shape can withstand 200bar extraction?

Gillette Safety Razor… Gillette Mach 3… Gillette Fusion 5…

If you don’t invent the new thing, people who have the old thing will have nothing to spend all their money on, and you won’t get stinking rich

Espresso is just like hi-fi audio. Soon people are going to sell Espresso grade power cords to deliver clean power to the pump, reducing vibration and leading to better extraction.

The espresso has a more circular tasting body

Because capitalism, there always has to be a new thing.
“Oh you don’t have the new thing?… Are you poor?”

  26. superlibster

It makes sense to me. No way the corners of a standard basket distribute evenly.

  27. phaazon_

Given how the water screen might be set up, I think that should actually yield a worse extraction profile? I’d expect a flow in the form a well instead of uniform flow, which is probably bad as you’ll get more stuff extracted at the center of the puck and less on the sides?

  28. adri647

Quick! Someone run a CT scan on that puck

  29. AMRtard

    It’s a hemi!

I apologize this joke is for like one very special person who understands engine design from the middle of the last century and exploitive marketing from the early 2000s and also follows the espresso subreddit.
